Under Lock and Key: Regina Police warn local auto businesses of increased theft

Regina, Saskatchewan — Last week, the Regina Police Service said it had witnessed an increase in a specific type of business-related auto theft, targeting businesses like auto repair shops and dealerships that use drop-boxes for customers’ vehicle keys.

Since August 2021, five separate collision repair centres have reported their drop boxes and the keys inside were accessed without authorization, resulting in the theft of six vehicles. In one event, the keys acquired were used to get into the vehicle and steal personal property. At least one of the vehicles was recovered outside the Regina area and one was known to be used during the commission of further criminal offences.

As a precaution, police in Regina are asking businesses that use drop boxes to assess their strategies. For more information on recommended actions, click here.
