Toronto, Ontario -- AkzoNobel is turning up the brightness on its sustainability efforts.
The Dutch coatings behemoth, which generated €10.711 billion last year, has inked a power purchase agreement with Swedish solar energy firm. According to its terms, Alight will construct a 15 MWp solar park in Sweden that, once operational in 2027,is expected to generate approximately 16 GWh of renewable electricity annually.
“Partnering with Alight, a trusted and experienced solar developer, is an important step in our journey to achieving 100 percent renewable electricity by 2030,” says Wijnand Bruinsma, AkzoNobel’s director of sustainability. “We already operate on 100 percent renewable electricity at all our manufacturing locations in Europe and teaming up with Alight will secure a supply of clean, reliable energy for most of our operations in Sweden.”
“We’re extremely proud to work with AkzoNobel, one of the world’s most sustainable paints and coatings companies,” says Johan Hernström, head of power purchase agreements at Alight. “We applaud them for taking bold steps to contribute to the energy transition.”
This initiative is meant to align with AkzoNobel's commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and transitioning to renewable energy sources. Beyond this project, the company is exploring additional renewable energy opportunities. Plans to construct an offsite renewable energy solution for its Malmö site are underway and the company is in discussions about another similar power purchase agreement in Germany.
