Taking a Turn: Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 uses ‘e-Corner’ system to drive sideways

Toronto, Ontario — Hyundai has featured a concept car capable of driving sideways via wheels that can rotate up to 90 degrees.

Featured at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), the vehicle, referred to as the Mobion, is an augmented Ioniq 5 from Hyundai parts group Mobis.

The vehicle incorporates a next generation “e-Corner system,” meaning that its four wheels can turn independently of one another.

According to a recent press release, the tech is reminiscent of the GMC Hummer EV’s crabwalk feature. However, in the Mobion, the wheels are able to rotate upwards of 90 degrees meaning that each wheel is essentially its own self-enclosed powertrain.

In reference to the tech, Hyundai has described how each wheel incorporates an electric motor, braking, steering and suspension functions.

Without any axle shafts or extra brake components threading into the underbody of the vehicle, the Mobion can drive sideways without potentially damaging the tires or wheel system.

Hyundai showcased a version of the vehicle earlier in 2023. More recent showcases show that the Mobion also includes an exterior lighting system that can alert other drivers to a series of situations such as a pedestrian crossing. The lighting system can also project images onto the ground using a 360-degree directional spectrum to alert other drivers of the vehicle’s intended turning direction.

Currently, the automaker has not revealed the full scope for its intended future applications of the “e-Corner system,” however, the automaker is optimistic about future applications.
