Survey: Performance outranks environmental impact

The chart above shows the relative importance our readers assigned to suppliers being environmentally friendly. In general, it’s ranked fairly high, with only 2 percent of respondents indicating it wasn’t important.

Hamilton, Ontario — September 26, 2017 — How important is it to you that your suppliers are environmentally friendly? If you’re like the majority of respondents to our latest survey, then you would rate it as “Very Important.” The survey focused on environmental issues on the supplier side of the business.

Collision Repair magazine runs new surveys every week on a variety of topics. Our next survey looks at consolidation in the jobber sector. You can participate in that survey at this link.

The first question in our environmental survey asked readers to let us know how important it is to them that a supplier is environmentally friendly. The majority (46 percent) rated it as “Very Important.” An additional 20 percent rated it even higher, at “Extremely Important.” A total of 32 percent of respondents rated it as “Somewhat Important.” Just 2 percent of respondents indicated it was “Not Important.”

The next question combined environmental and economic factors, asking “Would you pay a premium price for an environmentally friendly product?” Here we notice a bit of a divergence from the environmental friendliness that was rated so high in the last question. Very few respondents (about 4 percent) would do this, while 16 percent would not. However, the majority of answers were essentially pragmatic, with 80 percent saying “Depends on the price, depends on the product.”

We also asked readers to rank various aspects of the consumables they buy, in order of importance. These scores were then totaled and averaged to provide a broad view. Environmental Impact received the lowest overall rating at 3.7 out of 5.0. It’s not unimportant, but it doesn’t reach the levels of Price (4.1) and Supplier Support and Ease of Use (tied at 4.5). The single highest rated category was Performance at 4.7.

Performance beats out every other category among our survey respondents. Other aspects of a product are still important, but doing the job well wins the day.
