Seen At Skills Ontario: Virtual reality painting, welding simulator from Cognisco Technologies claims 3rd prize for best booth

Toronto, Ontario — Skills Ontario held its regional competition Monday through Wednesday this week, where young tradespeople went head to head for the gold prize in their trade.

Aside from the impressive competition, some companies attended the event to exhibit their products and technologies; and one of the booths that stole the show was a virtual refinisher training program from Cognisco Technologies.

Cognisco Technologies is a Montreal-based supplier of XR (extended reality) simulation and e-learning solutions for careers and technical education across North America. The company offers programs in many trades, including construction, auto service, machining and, of course, autobody and paint, via an Oculus Quest 2 or HTC Vive headset.

The tool is praised for its ability to arm users with a sense of muscle memory, as they mimic the same motions you’d perform welding in the bodyshop or painting in the booth.

With subscriptions to Cognisco Technologies’ platform, schools can equip entire classrooms (of any size) with multiple modules in the same environment. For example, where one student may be painting, another could be simulating a weld mere feet away.

Cognisco Technologies will continue showcasing its virtual reality technologies at the upcoming Skills Canada national competition in Winnipeg, Man., from May 24 through May 27, and this week at Skills Alberta, held May 3 and May 4.
