Canada’s top autobody repair and automotive painting students gathered in Toronto this week for the Skills Canada National Competition.
Held May 28 through 30 at the Enercare Centre, SCNC 2026 welcomed more than 550 students and apprentices competing in 45 skilled trade and technology contests from across the country.
For veteran judge Bill Speed, the event continues to offer new lessons even after more than two decades.
“This is my 24th time at nationals as a judge,” said Speed. “I still learn something new every year. Someone always comes up with something different and there’s so many ideas to be shared.”
In the autobody repair competition, eight post-secondary and six secondary students completed hands-on repair challenges judged to national industry standards.
Among the competitors was Ethan Almeida, cover star of Bodyworx Professional issue 12#4 who is preparing to represent Canada at WorldSkills Shanghai 2026 later this year. The competition also featured the gold medal winner from France, invited to compete alongside Canadian students ahead of the international event.
Automotive painting students also demonstrated advanced colour matching, spray application and refinishing techniques while judges evaluated finish quality, blending and presentation.
Competitor Matthew Blangdon of Newfoundland and Labrador said the national event exceeded expectations.

“It’s been an incredible experience here this week. It’s my first time in the city of Toronto and the hustle of the city has been a nice change to what I’m used to -- and very motivating!”
Industry partners were also onsite supporting competitors and connecting with students. CARSTAR representatives handed out sunglasses throughout the event.
“These kids’ futures are so bright, you’ve got to wear shades!” said Colin Welsh, zone director for CARSTAR Ontario.
The Skills Canada National Competition is the country’s only national, multi-trade competition for students and apprentices and serves as a pathway toward international events such as WorldSkills.
Medal winners will be announced during the closing ceremony on Saturday, May 30 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. EST. The ceremony will be livestreamed on Skills Canada’s YouTube channel.
