Ottawa, Ontario – In response to United States President Donald Trump’s declaration of tariffs against Canada, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced retaliatory tariffs related to the automotive industry.
Notably, on April 3, 2025, United States tariffs of 25 percent on Canadian automobiles came into effect.
As noted in an official government statement, the Canadian countermeasures include:
- 25 percent tariffs on non-CUSMA compliant fully assembled vehicles imported into Canada from the United States
- 25 percent tariffs on non-Canadian and non-Mexican content of CUSMA compliant fully assembled vehicles imported into Canada from the United States
- Canada’s intention to develop a framework for auto producers that incentives production and investment in Canada
Prime Minister Mark Carney also stressed that every dollar raised from these tariffs will go toward supporting auto workers.
"The global economy is fundamentally different today than yesterday,” said Carney. “We must respond with purpose and force and take every step to protect Canadian workers and businesses against the unjust tariffs imposed by the United States, including on automobiles. We will never cease to defend the interests of Canadians, safeguard our workers and businesses, and continue our pursuit to build the strongest economy in the G7."
