Axalta Coating Systems has published its 2025 Global Automotive Colour Popularity Report, revealing that evolving design priorities and sophisticated consumer expectations have reflected colour choices that are both timeless preferences and emerging stylistic expressions.
Despite interest in finishes that bring depth, movement and individuality, neutrals continue to dominate, noted Axalta in the report. Colour trends moved steadily rather than in dramatic shifts, with white remaining the leading colour at 29%. Black came in second at 23% and gray in third at 22%. According to the report, silver was less popular in 2025, at 7%, but blue maintained 6%, positioning itself as the strongest chromatic colour and “signalling growing interest in subtle, chromatic tones.”
Red, green and yellow/gold stayed small contributors at 3% each and brown/beige and others were both 2%. “Overall, the 2025 landscape reflects a market rooted in simplicity yet increasingly open to refined colour expression and contemporary finishes,” stated the report.
While white’s global popularity remains constant, other colours fluctuate in popularity, reflecting shifting consumer preferences. In North America, black’s popularity decreased slightly to 19% as chromatic colours rose in popularity. North American drivers also chose bolder colours, with blue at 10% and red at 7%.
In South America, silver increased to 14% and blue to 7%, which signals a “growing interest in modern, refined tones,” noted Axalta. Gray is most popular in Europe at 26%, with white and black close behind at 25% and 22%, creating a sophisticated palette. Finally, while black increased to 26%, expressive colours rose in popularity, with yellow/gold at 4%, green at 3% and purple and orange increasing by 2%.
