Collision Insights: EV repair market share grows

Mitchellls

Toronto, Ontario -- The amount of electric vehicle work being performed at North American collision repair facilities is increasing steadily, a new report from Mitchell International has found.

According to Ryan Mandell's Plugged-In: EV Collision Insights Q1 2025, repairable EV claims climbed to 3.12 percent of total collision claims in the US and 4.48 percent in Canada in the first quarter of the year. The figure indicates there has been a 30 percent increase in the number of EV collision claims compared to Q1 of 2025.

It also found EVs made up 9 percent of new car sales in the U.S. and 10 percent in Canada in March

Average repair bills reflect the costs: in Canada, the average EV repair in Q1 was US$7,026 compared with US$5,345 for gas cars. South of the border, EV repairs averaged at US$5,927  compared with US$4,857 .

The analysis suggest that one reason for the price disparity is that EVs use about 88 percent OEM parts compared to about 64 percent for traditional vehicles .

The EV boom is concentrated where EVs are already popular — Quebec and B.C. led in Canada, with EVs accounting for roughly eight percent of repairable collision claims .
