Toronto, Ontario — General Motors has issued a safety recall via the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for certain units of the 2023 and 2024 Cadillac Lyriq for an improperly welded rear seat belt anchorage.

The specific issue with these vehicle models built between March 14 and July 22, 2023, is that the rear seat belt anchorage was misaligned during manufacturing meaning that it has weaker welds between brackets making it less resistant under stress.

No solution is immediately available for the issue, although the problem can be avoided by not using the seat belts of the rear centre and rear left seats.

As of this moment, no injuries have been reported due to this issue, and a total of 43 affected Lyriq units have been identified using manufacturing records and parts trace data so far.

GM stated that it does not currently have the components necessary to complete the repairs needed for this defect. However, once the remedy is available, GM will notify owners of affected vehicles through both an online bulletin and a mailed letter.

Notifications will begin starting on January 8, 2024, and once repairs are available, the fix will involve replacing the existing seat frame with new seat frames equipped with correctly welded seat belt brackets.

Repairs will be carried out for customers with affected vehicles by dealership personnel free of charge.

Owners can check if their vehicle is affected by looking at the GM Owner Center or the NHTSA website by entering their VIN.
