St. Johns, Newfoundland and Labrador — Classic car owners assembled at a Wheels for Wishes fundraiser last week to help a legally blind 18-year-old raise $50,000 for a guide dog.

According to CBC News, Brandon Joy was deemed legally blind by the time he was in Grade 8 due to a rare condition called retinitis pigmentosa. He now only has seven percent of his vision.

This Fall, Joy will be attending University and he says having a guide dog by his side will make his life a lot easier and safer.

“My shins will be a lot safer,” he told CBC News. “I’ll just be a lot safer in general.”

After experiencing the St. John’s car parade, Joy said he felt very supported by his community.

“It means a lot. There’s a lot of great people here to support me, and I’m really happy that I’m able to get such an amazing group of people to help me out and fundraise money for my dog,” he told CBC.

Wheels for Wishes is a crew made-up of motor enthusiasts and volunteers who raise funds throughout Newfoundland and Labrador to provide kids within the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB) with dogs.
