Toronto, Ontario – May 1, 2019 – You won’t be seeing any newer model Smart Cars after this year. The small two-person Smart Cars are being discontinued in North America, Daimler made the announcement on Monday.

The company stated that there was a number of factors as to why they decided to end Smart Cars in North America, “including a declining micro-car market in the U.S. and Canada combined with the costs required to bring European-designed Smart in line with North America regulations.”

The small compact cars weren’t making enough in sales. Canadian sales fell 6.3 percent to 345 units in 2018 after the car went electric. In the U.S. the sales dropped 58 percent.

The electric brand of the car had a driving range of up to 93 kilometres. But when comparing this to other electric vehicles such as the Tesla Model 3 that has a range of 523 kilometres, it doesn’t compare.

Daimler said Mercedes will still be offering parts and repairs for Smart Cars. Daimler plans to enter a joint venture with Zhejiang Geely Holding Group for a new generation of Smart models.
