Toronto, Ontario – For the third year in a row, distracted driving is the top concern for Canadian drivers, according to a recent study from Desjardins Insurance.
The study, which surveyed approximately 4,000 Canadian drivers, aims to highlight the country’s behaviours and habits while on the road.
Of the 4,000 Canadian drivers surveyed, 60 percent reported distracted driving as their top risk factor.
Within this, perceived distractions included those happening outside of a vehicle at 34 percent; cellphone-related distractions at 31 percent; drivers using a media console or interface at 24 percent; and eating and drinking at 22 percent.
Other top factors identified were impaired driving at 59 percent and aggressive driving at 46 percent.
However, when asked about aggressive driving, only six percent of Canadian respondents considered themselves to be an aggressive driver, although, 71 percent reported regularly seeing aggressive driving behaviours when on the road.
"This survey is just one of the ways Desjardins is working to be a road safety advocate; to protect and help save lives on our roads," said Valérie Lavoie, President and COO of Desjardins General Insurance Group. "Distracted driving and aggressive driving put drivers and other road users at extreme risk. The insight we get and the behaviours and perceptions we learn about in the survey are key to having better-informed drivers on the road and safer roads in our communities."
