Market Signals: Hyundai Elantra leads top 10 light vehicle sales report for Q1 2023, says Desrosiers

Toronto, Ontario — Desrosiers Automotive Consultants (DAC) Inc. has released a new report for the first business quarter of 2023, noting “uneven recovery in supply visible across the automotive market” and significant variance in light vehicle sales performance.

Among passenger cars, the Hyundai Elantra retained its leading sales position despite seeing the smallest sales decrease, declining by 9.7 percent. In contrast, the Honda Civic, saw sales drop by 42.6 percent, attributed by DAC to semiconductor shortages.

By contrast, the Toyota Camry saw a 48.4 sales increase, placing it in the sixth position. Large increases were seen in the Chevrolet Malibu and Volkswagen Jetta, at 59.7 percent and 283.6 percent increases respectively. These two vehicles placed at the eighth and ninth positions for Q1 2023.

The Ford F-Series remained at the top of light trucks with a 31.7 percent sales increase, with no specified changes in the second-place RAM Pickup. Meanwhile, the Toyota RAV4 saw a significant 66.9% sales increase, placing it in third position among light trucks.

DAC praised the Kia Seltos as a standout performer from a percentage gain perspective, growing in sales by 101 percent in Q1, pushing it to the ninth position.

“Supply chain dynamics created some noticeable shifts in the top ten rankings” commented Andrew King, managing partner at DAC.

“Availability at the model level has become a driving force for consumer behaviour.”
