Alberta man lies about his gender to get cheaper auto insurance

By CRM Staff

Toronto, Ontario – August 2, 2018 – A 23-year-old man attempted to cheat his way out of the system by telling his auto insurance company that he was a female to get a cheaper rate, CBC News reported.

The unnamed man from Alberta, changed his government identification (drivers license and birth certificate) from male to female in order to receive a cheaper rate of insurance on his new Chevrolet Cruze.

“I’m a man, 100 percent. Legally, I’m a woman,” he said. He admitted that he did it all for cheaper car insurance.

Insurance Bureau of Canada said that gender is just one factor that insurers take into consideration, along with the driver’s age, vehicle, driving record and location.

In doing research the man found the difference in insurance rates between males to a females to be over $1,000 annually, resulting in a savings of  $91 per month. CBC released that the man was pretty angry about this difference and didn’t feel like getting screwed over any more.

To change his identity on his government papers, he went to the doctors and told them he wanted to identify as a woman now, in which they wrote a letter for him.

Spokesman for the Insurance Bureau of Canada said they are aware of people changing their gender for cheaper insurance, but they aren’t sure how often it is attempted. “If you’re going to declare on any document, you need to be truthful,” said the spokesman

“If not, you’re making a fraudulent claim. This could impact you for any future insurance application that you make, or any other aspect of your life,” he said.
