Fighting fire with scrap

By CRM staff

Toronto, Ontario – October 4, 2018 – At Standard Auto Wreckers, David Gold and his team have put their scrap to work. For years now, the Ottawa fire department has teamed up with Standard Auto Wreckers as a training ground for safety and efficiency when it comes to real life collision scenarios.

Standard supplies six cars per week and over 300 a year to the Ottawa fire department training effort while also allowing the crew to utilize one of their rural lots in order to perform a number of different training exercises including jaws of life training, extinguishing vehicle fires, and many more. Inspector fire chief Jim Andrews and trainer Andrew Ellis are two of the most active trainers for the program and have become good friends with the team.

David Gold, owner and operator of Standard, says he has never expected anything in return from Ottawa fire and was simply trying to help the community in allowing these training exercises to take place and supplying scrap vehicles. However, it seems the fire department will not allow Gold to be so modest.

“They always tell me how it just makes such a difference and how they community needs to know. They go out of their way to tell us all that and shake our hands.”

In the past few weeks, Gold and his team have received thanks from all members of the training program for their contribution and generosity. The department is currently working on awarding the wreckers with a commemorative plaque for their contribution, and there will even be television crews such as CTV and Breakfast Television soon to be on the wrecker lot to report on live demonstrations being performed by Ottawa fire.
