Editor’s Log: Secondary Investigation

Toronto, Ontario — August 30, 2019 — A few weeks ago, a short survey–inspired by a reader–appeared to show that OEM repair procedures were viewed as — at least generally –the best option for 90 percent of repairers.

As anyone who has been in a room with more than ten repairers in it, I am aware that there are very few things about the industry that nine-in-10 repairers agree on.

While this leads me to suspect this is more indicative of our readers, rather than of the collision community as a whole, I am always intrigued to see consensus building around issues.

Even if the numbers are indicative of bias within our readership, they do show that firmly abiding by OEM procedures isn’t an easy path for repairers.

An overwhelming 96 percent of OEM procedure-favoring respondents, auto insurers were not always happy about their decision to perform repairs as manufacturers advise them to be made.

It also showed that OEM certifications provided businesses that presented OEM repair estimations had a much better chance of winning the approval of insurers to perform the procedures than uncertified facilities.

Unlike the first statistic, bias in our readership is unlikely to have skewed those results.

Like the first statistic, these show the subject is in dire need of further study.

To do this, Collision Repair is eager to work with collision facilities–big and small–in order to produce a far more comprehensive report looking into the questions raised in our past study.

At this point, however, we are in the planning stage–a. To get this right, we could use the help of readers interested in helping us hone a secondary survey–one which will be administered not just to readers of our daily e-zine, but also to a representative sample of the collision community.

If you would like to provide feedback on the nature of our secondary survey, please let me know by emailing your name, and the name of your business to Gideon@mediamatters.ca.
