Desjardins promotes safe driving with new smartphone app

Montreal, Quebec — March 30, 2015

Desjardins has announced the release of Ajusto, the insurance company’s new smartphone app.

Available in the App Store and on Google Play, Ajusto’s telematics program is now accessible to more clients, aiming to help improve their driving behaviour. The app accomplishes this by providing near-instantaneous feedback to drivers relating to their behind-the-wheel habits, the company says.

The Ajusto insurance program has been available free of charge to Desjardins’ clients in Ontario and Quebec since 2013, providing them with the opportunity to save up to 25 percent on their auto insurance premiums. This is in addition to other discounts already offered by Desjardins.

The discount is applied at renewal and is based on four criteria: driving smoothness (avoiding sharp acceleration, braking and cornering), speed, time of day and distance travelled.

Desjardins says the app also offers new features like the ability to compare results with friends who also use Ajusto. The aim is to encourage users to share their results across their social media accounts as a means to push others to improve their driving habits and to promote road safety.

“We’re thrilled with Ajusto’s results since its initial launch and believe that it will help drivers improve road safety, one download at a time,” says Sylvie Paquette, President and COO of Desjardins Insurance.

Desjardins’ app is available to both clients and non-clients for a 90-day trial period—with no obligations—to help drivers better understand how the discounts would apply.

“It’s a way for us to put our creativity to work and stand out from the competition. And the Ajusto program is also in line with our mission to encourage safe driving, which leads to fewer accidents,” Paquette added.

The company says that clients who signed up to use Ajusto save an average of 12 percent on their auto insurance premiums, while 50 percent of Ajusto users saved at least 10 percent.

A recent survey by the company on clients from Ontario and Quebec found that drivers who used the app improved their driving and saved money, with two-thirds of respondents saying they started to pay more attention when accelerating and braking.

Desjardins is first insurer in Canada to offer a completely mobile insurance program that doesn’t require the installation of a device in the vehicle.
