Belron’s Blues: Claims Canada is “lagging” behind ADAS-populated countries

Toronto, Ontario — Canada is “lagging behind” other countries when it comes to nationwide implementation of ADAS-equipped vehicles, according to Belron Canada.

In one of Belron Canada’s reports, The Hidden Link Between Windshields and Road Safety, it claimed that 94 percent of car accidents are the fault of user driving mistakes, which the company says it feels could be greatly reduced with the combined safeties of autonomous vehicles and ADAS-equipped cars—up to an 80 percent reduction in collisions and deaths due to car accidents.

The company claims that 30 percent of cars in the U.K. were equipped with ADAS in 2018—by the end of 2020, it predicts only 20 percent of Canada’s fleet will be. Belron says that by 2022, all new cars in Europe will be equipped with some form of ADAS, like lane-keeping assistance or emergency braking, leaving Canada in the dust unless new legislation is passed.

Sylvie Leduc, the vice president of brand and customer promise at Belron Canada, says the onus at this point is on the Canadian government.

“With a new Parliament in Ottawa, we need to act now to improve our road safety record,” says Leduc. “The Towards zero vision which was set in 2001 will never become reality if Ottawa does not tap into the numerous advantages of ADAS and safety catalysts. New vehicles simply need to be more technological, but that same technology needs to be properly maintained and calibrated.”

Belron Canada noted that it thinks Parliament is still lacking in legislation to be able to develop the needed regulatory framework for ADAS in the country.
