Hyundai introduces fingerprint technology

By CRM staff

Toronto, Ontario — January 3, 2019 — Unlocking and starting your Hyundai will soon be as easy as the touch of a driver’s finger.

Automaker Hyundai announced that finger print technology will be available on its 2019 Santa Fe SUVs, but only in select regions. The company didn’t release any information on what regions these might be, but did say the technology would later become more widely available.

The new fingerprint technology is installed on the door’s handles and ignition button of the Santa Fe and according to the company is much more secure than a traditional vehicle. The chances of the car mistaking the driver’s identity are one in 50,000, which makes it five times more effective than conventional vehicle keys, including smart keys.

With each use the sensor becomes better at detecting the driver’s digits, lowering the chance of mistaken identity.

Hyundai’s new fingerprint technology will also be capable of creating custom profiles for users. This includes the vehicle automatically adjusting seating positions, connected car features and side-view mirror angles to fit a particular driver’s preferences.

Albert Biermann, Hyundai’s head of Research & Development Division, stated that there are “plans to further expand the application of the technology to allow the adjustment of temperature, steering wheel position, and many other features which will be tailored to driver’s preferences.”

Hyundai hasn’t revealed whether the new technology will be a standard feature or if it will be accompanied by a larger price tag.
