Prince Albert, Saskatchewan — July 26, 2017 — Police from across Saskatchewan joined forces in Prince Albert recently for a two-day Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) event.

According to a statement from Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI), all traffic safety violations were enforced with a special focus on impaired driving, distracted driving (cellphones), speeding/aggressive driving and seatbelts/child seats.

Law enforcement issued 302 tickets during the two-day blitz, including 23 tickets for cellphone use while driving. Commercial vehicles accounted for 106 of the total tickets written.

SGI-certified car seat technicians also participated in the STEP event to help ensure and promote child passenger safety. They checked 182 child seats and seatbelts during the check stops and gave away nine car seats and 15 booster seats to encourage child restraint use.

In addition, June saw police place the focus on new drivers and motorcyclists, specifically those not following the restrictions outlined on their learner or novice licences. A total of 51 tickets were handed out to motorists who were driving as a learner without a supervising driver, and 21 tickets for failing to comply with a license endorsement or restriction. On the positive side, this blitz only netted one motorist who exceeded the province’s zero tolerance for alcohol or drug use for new drivers.
