Toronto, Ontario – Set up for the 34th annual Skills Ontario competition has begun at the Toronto Congress Centre, set to take place on May 1 to May 2, followed by a closing ceremony on May 3.

In a LinkedIn post, WorldSkills expert Bill Speed invites shop owners to come and see these young tradespeople at work, saying “I am constantly amazed at the skill of these competitors, come out to see them strive for success. These are your future employees.”

According to a comment by Skills Ontario’s director of competition, Jennifer Green, there will be more than 2,400 competitors across all contests on both days.

For the uninitiated, competitors will be given a task, tools and timed on their performance during a relatively short time period, testing their ability to learn, adapt and succeed in a high-stress scenario.

This provincial competition invites students who placed at the top of Skills Ontario qualifying competitions, representing more than 70 trades in the region. Gold medalists will then be invited to represent Ontario, competing against their peers at Skills Canada’s national competitions.
