When It Rains, It Pours: ICBC rebate cheques delayed due to cyberattacks

Victoria, British Columbia — In yet another twist on the path to British Columbian drivers finally getting rebate cheques from ICBC’s pandemic savings, the crown insurer reported on Wednesday that they suffered a cyberattack that has caused a temporary delay in the cheque delivery process.

The Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC) reported that the attack targeted a third-party vendor involved in the printing and distribution of the cheques and who had access to the names, addresses, COVID-19 rebate cheque amounts and cheque numbers of customers.

However, ICBC stated to customers that none of their information was obtained in the attack.

“There is no indication this information was obtained,” reads the press release from ICBC.

“Ensuring the safety and security of customers’ information is our top priority. We are actively monitoring the situation with the vendor and will work with the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner for British Columbia (OIPC) if any information has been obtained.”

The long awaited rebate cheques were set to be sent out this week and, while not giving any specific timeline, the release from ICBC stated that “the delay will be minimal.”
