Memories in Miniature: International variants featured in Hot Wheels Ultra Hots second run

Toronto, Ontario — The makers of Hot Wheels are sending out something special for all the 80s babies out there this holiday season, as Mattel has re-introduced the popular “Ultra Hots” lineup of diecast toy cars, this time featuring some miniaturized international rarities.

This flashy line of mini sports cars ran from 1984 to 1986 and saw a small revival between 2006 and 2007. The cars were notable for featuring spectraflame-type paint jobs and UH (Ultra Hot) wheel design, and have since come to accrue significant value with certain pieces of the original run valued at thousands of dollars.

Following the release of a more American-centric mix of models earlier this year, the second run of these revamped Ultra Hots will take a trip beyond U.S. borders and treat fans to miniature versions of some rare international market model variants, including the Brazil-exclusive Volkswagen SP-2, in addition to the Brazil variant of the 1974 Dodge Charger and the Japanese variant of the Honda Civic SI.

In all, the second mix of Hot Wheels’ 2022 Ultra Hots run includes the following models:

  • 1968 Mercury Cougar
  • 1967 Shelby GT-500
  • 1970 Pontiac Thunderbird
  • 1971 Chevrolet El Camino
  • 1974 Brazilian Dodge Charger
  • Nissan Silvia S14 Drift
  • Honda Civic SI
  • Volkswagen SP-2

While the real versions of these rides may be out of reach to many, their pocket-sized counterparts may just be what the auto enthusiast in your life is looking for this holiday season—it may just take some skillful eBay bidding and a dash of luck.
