Minnesota, United States — 3M was ranked 19th on Boston Consulting Group’s annual Most Innovative Companies list, jumping up 18 spots from last year’s ranking.
Boston Consulting Group’s list results are based on a survey of more than 1,000 innovative executives polled in December 2022 and January 2023.
Companies are assessed in four areas:
- Global mindshare: the number of votes received from all global innovation executives
- Industry peer view: the number of votes received from executives in company’s own industry
- Industry disruption: the Diversity Index (Herfindahl-Hirschman) of votes across industries
- Value creation: the total shareholder return, including share buybacks, over the three-year period between January 2020 through December 2022
Apple was named the most innovative company in the world for the fourth straight year—the company has actually held its title since 2005, with the exception of 2019. Tesla is number two. The only other automakers on the list were Mercedes-Benz at 43rd and BMW at 49th.
