PPG’s SEM Products business and 4Plastic have introduced a texture refinishing system designed to help collision repair shops restore non-painted, textured plastic components rather than replace them.
The system includes coatings formulated to replicate common original equipment manufacturer surface textures used on exterior plastic parts such as bumpers and trim. It is intended for use on bare plastic components that are increasingly left unpainted by automakers.
The release also introduces a companion mobile tool, the 4Plastic App, which allows technicians to identify and match surface textures to support consistent repairs.
“As automakers increasingly replace traditionally painted panels with textured bare plastic external components, the collision repair industry needs solutions to accurately restore these surfaces after damage,” said Larry Trexler, global allied products technical market support manager for automotive refinish at PPG.
According to the companies, internal testing showed the coatings demonstrated durability and resistance to abrasion, solvents and environmental exposure comparable to normal part aging.
