Iqaluit, Nunavut- At approximately 1:30 AM Tuesday, June 21st, came reports of a two-vehicle fire behind Iqaluit’s 8-story apartment complex.

These abandoned vehicles were considered “derelict” says Sharon Nowlan, acting fire chief for Iqaluit. A nearby third vehicle was also prevented from catching ablaze by the Iqaluit Fire Department.

The fire is currently under investigation. “It could be suspicious in nature, we never know until the investigation is complete,” says Nowlan. The fact that the cars were abandoned leaves room for doubt that the fire would have started from the vehicles themselves.

“Because the vehicles seemed to be abandoned it’s likely that it was started from a source other than the vehicle(s) running,” says Nowlan.

Police arrived at the scene shortly after 1:45 a.m. The fire department put out the fire after 30 minutes. There were four trucks and eight firefighters on the scene.
