General Motors’ Collision Assistance can now be launched by vehicle owners via mobile apps for minor incidents.
The Collision Assistance app launched in November of 2024, and it provided consumers with a search tool for certified GM shops, including independent, certified dealer and MSO shops. Vehicle owners can also collect important information at the scene of an accident using the app’s camera and prompts.
Before consumers could launch the app themselves, they would only receive a notification about the service after OnStar was activated. By enabling consumers to activate Collision Assistance, GM has expanded the app’s reach to those who do not regularly have minor incidents and may not be familiar with nearby repair facilities. Users can temporarily pause and relaunch Collision Assistance in the app, and the step-by-step experience does not interrupt emergency calls.
GM reports that consumers used certified GM shops at a higher rate after the launch of the initial app. There is not enough data available yet on the self-discover feature of the app.
GM’s news article on Collision Assistance states that the recommended network facilities have access to GM Genuine parts and ACDelco components that are engineered specifically for GM vehicles to support performance and the operation of safety systems.
GM vehicle mobile apps able to launch Collision Assistance are myChevrolet, myGMC, myBuick and myCadillac. An active OnStar service plan is required. The self-discover feature is currently only available in the United States.
