Toronto, Ontario – Rivian has filed a patent application for heated headlamp lens technology that aims to combat the issue of iced-over lights in colder climates.

In an application filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and published on December 26, 2024, the patent specifically describes a system inside the vehicle’s headlamps that would include a carbon nanotube layer.

The carbon nanotube layer would be configured to thermally couple with a heating element inside the vehicle.

From here, the system would use a controller to activate the heating function via battery pack discharge or redirected current.

Ultimately, while there is no guarantee that this technology will ever make it to the manufacturing stage, for Rivian, the application is one solution to combat the potential dangers of low-visibility headlights due to the effects of ice and snow.
