Toronto, Ontario — On Thursday, Toyota confirmed plans to recall the Highlander SUV over an issue that could cause the front bumper to loosen.

Recalls are beginning in the United States with Canada and Mexico to follow.

The recall only affects the 2020 to 2023 model year for the Toyota Highlander and Highlander Hybrid vehicles, with approximately 751,000 vehicles being affected in the United States alone.

The problem with the vehicle has to do with the front lower bumper cover assembly which is connected with mounting tabs. Specifically, minor impacts to the lower front bumper could cause the mounting tabs to detach from the vehicle.

Concern exists over drivers potentially running over their own front bumpers as well as causing collisions by leaving debris in the road.

Toyota plans to have dealers inspect the vehicle’s upper and lower bumper cover mounting tabs and slots for signs of damage. Service centres will then install new retention hardware.

In the United States, affected owners will be notified by late December.
