Newmarket, Ontario — The music was pumping and the suds were flowing at CARSTAR Newmarket on Saturday, as the family-run collision repair shop welcomed in the community for a day of good fun for a good cause.
The entire Deokinandan family was on deck this past weekend, alongside staff and much of their own families, offering $5 car washes and sharing in some food and games with members of the Newmarket community, all as part of CARSTAR Canada’s annual “Shine Season”, in support of Cystic Fibrosis Canada.
The sweltering heat of the past few weeks held off that Saturday afternoon, allowing for cornhole, bouncy castles and a barbecue to be enjoyed to their fullest extent. Among those taking part in the weekend’s festivities included the York Regional Police and Fire services, as well as Newmarket Ward 5 councillor Bob Kwapis.
Romena Deokinandan, director of finance and co-owner alongside her husband Bisram, also happens to be an avid collector of CARSTAR’s branded stuffed animals and was selling off pieces of her collecting for $5 a pop.
She told Collision Repair that CARSTAR Newmarket managed to raise $2,000 for Cystic Fibrosis Canada on Saturday, well surpassing her goal of $1,500 and putting on display the overwhelming generosity of the local community.
“We had lots of volunteers, people were going home to get their other cars washed, some people were giving more money than the car wash asked for—some people even dropped by just for food!” said Deokinandan.
“We’re so thankful for the tremendous support we got from all the volunteers, and everyone who stopped by.”
