Toronto, Ontario — Peel Police have intercepted 78 stolen vehicles heading for the United Arab Emirates following an investigation into a Greater Toronto Area auto theft ring.

This brings the tally of rescued vehicles in 2023 to more than 500, said Peel Regional Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah at a press conference on Tuesday.

He elaborates that these 78 rescued vehicles were valued at approximately $10 million, with the proceeds of which would likely return into organized crime circulation.

This bust was attributed to Project R&R, a months-long investigation by the Peel Police, Canada Border Services Agency, the Port of Montreal and Équité Association partnering to aid in the recovery of stolen vehicles in the Greater Toronto Area.

“The dedication of our officers as seen here today, combined with increased collaboration, enhanced enforcement and greater awareness will continue to make an impact in combatting auto theft,” said Duraiappah.

Four individuals involved in the organized theft, transport and export of high-end vehicles were arrested. They face 34 charges for motor vehicle theft, possession of criminally obtained property, possession of a prohibited device, and possession for the purpose of trafficking.
