Windsor, Ontario — An electric vehicle battery manufacturing facility is officially on the books for Windsor following an historic $5 billion investment from municipal, provincial and federal governments.

Marking the largest automotive manufacturing investment in the history of the province, Stellantis, alongside  LG Energy Solution Ltd., expects to employ about 2,500 people at the automaker’s upcoming EV battery production facility, set to open in 2025. Construction is slated to begin later this year.

The facility will have a production capacity of 45 gigawatt hours (GWh) and will supply Stellantis plants in the North American market with lithium-ion batteries for EVs.

“Attracting this multi billion-dollar investment will secure Ontario’s place as a North American hub for building the cars and batteries of the future,” said Ontario Premier Doug Ford.

“As we secure game-changing investments, we’re also connecting resources, industries and workers in northern Ontario with the manufacturing might of southern Ontario to build up home-grown supply chains. Every region of Ontario will benefit with thousands of jobs being created and a stronger economy that works for everyone.”

The City of Windsor reportedly plans to lease the land at 9865 Twin Oaks Dr. at a cost of between $45 million and $50 million to the Stellantis-LG joint venture.
