Vancouver, British Columbia — A proposal currently in front of Vancouver city council looks like it would be enough to make Karl Marx blush, as the city is weighing out how to make the most of peer-to-peer car sharing in an urban centre.
The city is currently looking for ways to support companies like Turo; a B.C.-based car-sharing service that launched in June 2020.
The motion, from Coun. Lisa Dominato, calls for communication with companies like Turo to help spur the adoption of these sorts of services.
Dominato said that services such as this can help eliminate the costs that come with vehicle ownership.
“Instead of owning their own vehicle, residents can access the pool of vehicles already in the city,” she said.
German car-share company Car2Go left 230,000 customers behind when they shuttered North American operations in 2020, leaving a gap for the B.C.-based company to move into the forefront of the market.
