Toronto, Ontario – According to DesRoisers Automotive Consultants Inc. (DAC), the year 2020 has not been kind to motor vehicle assembly in Canada.

With plant shutdowns, models cut from automaker rosters, and production pausing during the pandemic, shipments for the motor vehicle assembly industry dropped 28.2 percent for the year. For the first time since 2010, the industry fell below $45 billion.

The motor vehicle parts and accessories industry fared better, down 18.5 percent for the year, but still fell below $30 billion in shipments for the first time since 2014. The motor vehicle body and trailer manufacturing industry saw its shipments drop 13.5 percent in 2020.

“Despite the huge drops in shipments in 2020, the year was largely one of hope for the Canadian automotive manufacturing sector,” commented Andrew King, Managing Partner at DAC. “New investments at a number of plants, the reopening of Oshawa, and the establishment of a footprint for EV manufacturing in Canada all brought optimism for the future.”
