If You’re Snoozin’, You’re Losin’: Government mandates electronic logging devices on commercial vehicles

Ottawa, Ontario — Federal Minister of Transport Omar Alghabra made a statement from Parliament on Monday regarding driver safety and the use of electronic logging devices for commercial vehicles.

In a move that the federal government feels will help cement its emphasis on road safety and curbing driver fatigue, electronic logging devices will be mandated on all federally-regulated commercial vehicles by the summer.

“These devices track drivers’ working hours to ensure all federally regulated motor carriers and their drivers operate safely,” said Alghabra.

“Consultations in the lead-up to the mandate generated broad support, and identified June 12, 2021, as a feasible date for the installation of electronic logging devices.”

The government considers this decision to be a win-win situation for regulators and drivers alike, with Alghabra saying, “I’m confident this approach will ensure the safe and efficient operation of commercial carriers by providing flexibility to commercial operators, while also maintaining the safety benefits for Canadians.”

The date to obtain and install an electronic logging device is June 12, however, initially, there will be no late penalty because “Early enforcement measures will consist of education and awareness,” according to the statement.
