Toronto, Ontario — July 2, 2018 — Last week, Tesla produced more than 5,000 of its Model 3 cars.

The self-imposed goal, which many observers believed to be unlikely to be reached, will have to be repeated many times over for the company to manage to successfully fill the 450,000 orders customers have paid for. While Tesla aims to sell the base model for just $35,000 US  – a price that would make the car an affordable choice for many millions of people – the cheapest available models now being offered cost $49,000 US.

The news was celebrated by the company’s controversial CEO Elon Musk with a tweet. It simply read: “The spice. Must. Flow.” A reference to the 1965 novel ‘Dune’ by Frank Herbert, Musk appears to be comparing his electric vehicles with a fictional narcotic made from worm faeces, the spice Melange. The tweet may sound like an unusual choice, it is sending shivers up the spines of science fiction fans everywhere.

In the novel, the line is said by the representative of a shadowy intergalactic transportation service to justify the decision to support a messianic revolutionary. The decision ultimately leads to humanity spending a millennium-and-a-half under the yoke of a tyrannical slug-man known as the ‘God-Emperor’.

While Musk is not on the record for having tyrannical ambitions, his dreams of extra-terrestrial conquest are well known. Last year, he sent his Tesla roadster to Mars. Perhaps fortunately, it missed.
