Employee Aftercare: Volkswagen builds electric vehicle themed escape room to ease job obsolescence anxieties

Wolfsburg, Germany — Worried about workplace obsolescence in the electric vehicle (EV) era, while the world goes through a barrage of colourfully named crises? Volkswagen AG believes the solution is an EV themed escape room—for the first problem, anyway.

According to a company press release, Volkswagen’s eMotionRoom is an in-house escape room where teams of four employees must solve puzzles within 20 minutes across three sections, with each section examining a part of Volkswagen’s manufacturing history from the 19th century to the near future.

This falls under a wider plan by the OEM to to prepare its internal-combustion engine (ICE) oriented workforce to eventually build EVs, rather than simply a mildly entertaining solution to a far more serious issue.

Volkswagen has invested $95 billion to transition its 22,000 strong manufacturing force to produce EVs, and 1,200 of its employees expect to begin production on the ID. 3 in the second half of 2023.

“Wolfsburg is special in that ICE vehicles will also still be built here for many years to come. The upcoming transformation is about interfacing smoothly with ongoing operations and with production,” said Christian Vollmer, board member for production and logistics.
