Quality Questioned: Study finds Tesla lags auto industry in quality

JDpowerstudy

Toronto, Ontario — A new study says Tesla owners reported more problems in the first 90 days of ownership than any other U.S. auto brand. The issues found with Tesla vehicles were mainly concerned with production, paint imperfections, and poor fitted body panels.

J.D. Power’s study is considered an industry benchmark for quality. The study surveys owners and then grades auto brands based on the number of problems reported per 100 vehicles. The top brands listed in ‘The 2020 Initial Quality Study’ were Dodge and Kia.

The study found that Tesla had 250 problems per 100 vehicles, whereas Dodge and Kia had 136 problems per 100 vehicles. The study did note however, vehicles with less technological advancements, typically have lower amounts of reported issuesas there is less to go wrong.

Tesla did not officially take part in J.D. Power’s study. However, the automaker was  included in the study anyway, by surveying roughly 1,250 owners—the majority of which were Tesla Model 3 owners.
