Richmond Hill, Ontario — January 10, 2018 — While sales of cars slipped in Canada last year, it was a record-breaking year for vehicle sales overall, thanks to the number of light trucks bought by Canadians, according to a report released by DesRosiers Automotive Consultants.

With Canadians buying more than two million vehicles in 2017, light truck sales rose by 8.7 percent over the previous year, while car sales dipped by almost 3.5 percent.

With 1,400,000 light trucks on Canada’s roads accounting for almost seventy percent of all new vehicles, the share of cars was brought to its lowest total in more than fifty years.

The fashionability of pickups is not a Canadian trend. South of the border, used pickups have been seeing the highest sales increases of all vehicle classes, at 10.4 percent over last December, according to the Used Vehicle Value Index from Manheim, also released this week.

Richmond Hill, Ontario-based DesRosiers Automotive Consultants has provided economic statistics and analysis on the to the automotive industry since 1990.
