Food for Thought: Domenic Prochilo launches campaign in support of Toronto restaurant, hospitality industry

Toronto, Ontario — Simplicity Car Care’s Domenic Prochilo is stepping up for Toronto area restaurants in a big way.

Prochilo, who serves as Simplicity’s VP of operations, announced what he calls a “3x6x9” campaign in support of the restaurant and hospitality industry in Ontario, which has been plagued by continuous COVID-19 lockdown restrictions since March 2020.

Armed with a GoFundMe and a $100,000 goal, Prochilo says he’s not just asking people to donate their cash toward the cause—he’s “putting his sneakers where his mouth is.”

“From January 18 to January 27, I will be running three six-kilometre runs per day, for nine days straight,” he wrote on LinkedIn. “Please help me win this race by donating to the cause, every dollar in support of this cause will help rent, utilities, inventory and staff get paid and live to serve another day.”

Restaurants in Ontario have been limited to take-out service only since Jan. 5 of this year. They are currently set to reopen at 50 percent capacity on Jan. 31, but this is not the first set of lockdown measures the province’s restauranteurs have had to weather since COVID-19 emerged nearly two years ago.

“In Toronto, indoor dining has already lost 408 days to closure,” wrote the Canadian Federation of Independent Businesses in a Jan. 3 statement.
