Toronto, Ontario — Data from the U.S.’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) shows that Tesla vehicles are the most likely to be recalled, over a projected 30-year lifespan.
According to a list compiled by automotive indexing site, iSeeCars.com, Tesla vehicles had four placements in the Top 10 vehicles most likely to be recalled. This was compiled using data from the past ten years of NHTSA vehicle recalls, and projecting that figure to a 30-year average vehicle lifespan.
The Tesla Model Y expects to face 62.4 recalls over its 30-year lifespan, 15.6 times the average. This was quickly followed by the Porsche Panamera facing 61.8 expected recalls over 30 years, 15.45 times the average.
Lower on the list are the Tesla Models 3, X and S, with 56.8, 27.3 and 26.4 expected recalls respectively–at least six times more than the average vehicle.
One notable caveat highlighted by iSeeCars is that “Tesla’s ability to enact over-the-air (OTA) updates suggests at least some portion of its recalls won’t involve service center visits.”
Other brands named in the Top 25 list with the most recalls include Porsche, who appeared four times. Meanwhile, BMW and Jeep appeared three times and Ford, Lincoln, Ram and Volkswagen appeared twice each.
On the flip side, Mercedes, Lexus, and Toyota vehicles had the lowest number of lifetime recalls, with the MINI Convertible topping the list at 0.2 expected recalls: 0.05 times the average.
