Toronto, Ontario — The Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) has released this year’s top safety vehicle safety pick and pick plus award winners in a total of nine vehicle categories.

The IIHS’s top safety picks first began in 2006, with the top pick plus category being first awarded in 2013.

In order to be awarded a top safety pick award, a vehicle must perform well in all test categories and more specifically, receive the following scores:

  • Good ratings in the small overlap front test
  • Acceptable or good ratings in the updated moderate overlap front test
  • Good rating in the updated side test
  • Acceptable or good headlights standard
  • Acceptable or good in the pedestrian front crash prevention test

Comparatively, to receive a top pick plus award, vehicles must achieve a good rating in all categories except the updated side test and the pedestrian front crash prevention test, where an acceptable rating is allowed.

When looking solely at top safety pick plus winners, a total of 48 vehicles made the list.

The winners for the small cars category are as following:

  • 2024-25 Acura Integra
  • 2025 Honda Civic
  • 2024-25 Mazda 3
  • 2024-25 Mazda Hatchback,
  • 2024 Toyota Prius
