Toronto, Ontario -- Tariffs imposed on auto parts by the Trump Administration are likely to increase vehicle thefts in Canada, a new report from the Équité Association has found.
Released May 26, the report warns that rising prices and longer wait times for legitimate replacement parts could drive demand for stolen components — particularly in Canada, where organized auto theft is already a multibillion-dollar industry.
“Vehicle theft is not just a crime of opportunity — it's a supply chain,” the report notes. “And when that supply chain gets squeezed, the black market fills the gap.”
The report points to new 100 percent tariffs on Chinese-made parts, including aluminum and steel products, wiring harnesses and batteries — components frequently targeted by auto thieves. The policy shift is part of a broader trade strategy rolled out by former U.S. President Donald Trump during his 2024 campaign and enacted in early 2025.
While Canada is not the target of the tariffs, it is likely to feel the effects. Parts shortages and price spikes could make stolen components more attractive for both consumers and unscrupulous collision repair suppliers. Collision industry professionals are being advised to remain vigilant for suspicious parts.
