Under the Wire: York police seize 161 stolen vehicles set for international shipments

YorkAutoTheft

Toronto, Ontario — York Regional Police announced Friday that its Auto Cargo Theft Unit seized 161 vehicles, valued at more than $10 million, following a months-long investigation in Toronto’s north end.

The police press release did not identify the location or locations these allegedly stolen vehicles were seized from; however, a video published alongside the release showed several vehicles being removed from storage containers at a warehouse location, in addition to a packed parking lot full of cars with no license plates.

Police say the vehicles were meant to be shipped to “various locations in Africa and the Middle East,” according to the release.

While the investigation is still ongoing, police are reminding drivers to take precautions against auto theft, such as installing a steering wheel lock, setting up surveillance cameras around your vehicle and, if possible, parking in a locked garage, as many thefts occur in residential driveways, most often between midnight and 6 a.m.

The investigation involved the Canadian Pacific Police Service, the Canada Border Services Agency and Equité Association, alongside the York Regional Police.
