Toronto, Ontario – Hyundai has released a position statement on the repair procedures for bumper covers with advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).

According to the statement, front and rear bumpers may have corner radar units mounted behind them on the unibody. As a result, when repairing a bumper, repairers should be sure to mask off the corner radar units or remove them from the vehicle to prevent contamination and paint overspray.

If any corner radar units are damaged, contaminated or have overspray during the refinishing process, they must be replaced and recalibrated according to shop manual procedures, says the position statement.

When looking at specific paint types, the statement notes that paint with excessive aluminum content may also interfere with corner radar performance.

Finally, plastic repairs to the front and rear bumpers are not recommended, the statement advises.

The statement concludes that when working with ultrasonic sensors, these features should be removed from the front or rear bumpers before beginning any refinishing work.
