Green Machines: Toyota and Ford were announced winners of Canada’s Greenest Employers 2020 competition

Toronto, Ontario ⁠— Two of the largest automotive manufacturers in Canada, Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada (TTMC) and Ford Motor Company of Canada were announced as winners of Canada’s Greenest Employers 2020—an editorial competition that sheds light on employers who lead the nation in environmental awareness.

TMMC was recognized for their continuous support of environmental initiatives in surrounding communities, including the Woodstock Wetland Trail Walk. Additionally, green-thumbed TMMC employees manage on site organic Giving Gardens at the Cambridge and Woodstock locations, which produce over $3,200 worth of organic fruits and vegetables each year for donation to local charitiestwo honey bee apiaries are also maintained at TMMC’s Cambridge facility, producing over 45 kg of honey last year, which was also donated to a local charitable organization, says Mediacorp Canada. 

Ford Motor Company of Canada was recognized for their achievements in waste reduction. The Ontario-based plant has reduced waste per vehicle sent to a landfill by 61 percent, over a baseline year of 2013, says Mediacorp Canada. Currently, all Canadian facilities have achieved a zero waste to landfill status. They were also selected for their multi-year strategy to reduce carbon emission which includes spending $11-billion by 2022 to develop and offer customers 40 hybrid vehicles, including 16 fully electric models—one of which includes the new all-electric Mustang Mach-E high-performance utility vehicle.

Desjardins Group, Lévis, Quebec was also singled out by the competition editors for their “notable initiatives”. The company installed over 200 charging stations at its branches in Ontario and Québec to encourage more of its customers and employees to use electric vehicles.

At this year’s competition a total of 86 Canadian employers were recognized for their environmental achievements. Applicants are selected by the editors of Canada’s Top 100 Employers, and are evaluated based on how they compare to other employers in their industry.
