GM’s new vehicle locator app

By CRM Staff

Toronto, Ontario – February 21, 2019 – General Motors is launching a new app-based feature to help customers locate their vehicles.

The “Vehicle Locate” service, which is available to owners of eligible 2012 model year or newer Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC vehicles in the U.S., Canada and Mexico, will send text message alerts to owners when their vehicle leaves or enters a present 20-mile radius.

Users can create boundary areas as wide as a 20-mile radius or as small as a specific address when setting up Vehicle Locate. Vehicle owners can then select up to 10 people to receive alerts when the vehicle enters or exits that boundary area.

GM product manager of Remote Services Alejandra Gonzalez stated in a press release that Vehicle Locate will provide drivers and their loved ones “with peace of mind in a variety of different drive-related scenarios.”

GM first discussed the idea of text alerts five years ago, as a way to assist parents in monitoring teen drivers through OnStar.

Vehicle Locate, as a result of GM’s of OnStar last year, is included with any paid OnStar plan for owners who bought their vehicles prior to May 1, 2018.

The feature starts at $14.99 per month as a part of a ‘Remote Access” plan for users who purchased a vehicle after the May, 1 date.

Car owners who purchase the paid plan will also receive features such as remote key fob services to remotely start, stop, lock and unlock vehicles, and on-demand diagnostics to troubleshoot common issues.
