COVID Consumers: First-time buyers increasing vehicle sales as pandemic shifts attitudes on purchasing a vehicle

Toronto, Ontario — With the use of public transportation, ride-sharing apps and vehicle rentals down amid the pandemic, Canadians who previously never considered buying a car are now reconsidering. 

According to a recent survey conducted by Autotrader, first-time car buyers in Canada are three times more likely than experienced buyers to purchase a vehicle because of the COVID-19 pandemic. With one in 10 respondents stating their decision to purchase a car was a direct result of the pandemic.

The survey asked 600 Canadians in late August about their vehicle purchases during the pandemic and looked at responses from both experienced and first-time buyers.

The survey also found that respondents listed recreational purposes as the top reason for purchasing a vehicle during the pandemic. Out of the consumers who were buying a vehicle as a result of the coronavirus, 34 percent said having use of a vehicle for local recreational travel and road trips was their top reason for the purchase.

These promising trends may be good news for the auto industry, and could bring vehicle sales back to normal.
