Volvo Cars and NVIDIA are expanding their partnership to advance automated-driving technology in future Volvo vehicles, building on a collaboration that began in 2017.
“Volvo has been synonymous with car safety for almost 100 years. By working with NVIDIA, we bring together two distinct strengths: industry-leading safety knowledge and world-class AI technology. That combination gives us a unique opportunity to create safer and more attractive cars for our customers,” said Håkan Samuelsson, president and CEO of Volvo Cars, in the press release.
The key goal of their partnership, according to the release, is to set a new standard for safe automotive driving that is convenient and worthy of customer trust. The main technological changes will include the hypherion sensor, and halos OS software. According to NVIDIA’s website, Hypherion is a modular in-vehicle sensor architecture with fourteen high-definition cameras, nine radars and 360-degree sensors. Halos OS “provides a production-ready safety foundation and broader validation and certification framework covering inspection, simulation and testing from cloud to car.”
NVIDIA, founded in 1993 by Jensen Huang, is a multi-national technological company in Santa Clara, California. Its core areas of business are artificial intelligence, automotive and data centres.
Volvo and NVIDIA’s combined goal for this expanded partnership is “to build a new generation of cars that make driving safer and more effortless,” said Huang in the recent release.
